Carrollton, Texas is near Dallas, and has a population of around 100,000. It is an intentionally business-friendly city. The surrounding highways, three major railway lines and it’s central position for goods moving through the country to the far West all combine to make it a prime location. In addition, they have chosen to become a Foreign Trade Zone.

The city is bounded by the Southern Pacific Railway to the North and by the town of Farmer’s Branch on the South. In contrast, the city’s center is clearly delineated by S. Josey Lane which runs North-South, and E. Belt Line Rd. that marks the town from West to East.

You’ll know you’re in Republican territory when you find the President George Bush Turnpike. Along the lines of this pro-business President, is an upscale community called Moore Farm. This is an intentional community where housing prices start in the $300,000 zone and go up from there. Sotherby is the proud building of this entire site, and as always, the developers are relying on those who move in to do a lot more than just pay them. They are meaning for the people to develop friendliness, cooperation and genuine community spirit. This is a reminder that intentional communities can be grounded in common beliefs and values or in economics or political perspectives.

Carrollton prides itself on having community programs. Neighborhoods must band together into groups containing at least 30 homes in order to be able to register for a current grant matching program. Also, local programs are only allowed to effect common areas and cannot be used to improve individual private property.

Finally, in their interest to preserve the city, the local police department will be serving warrants the way hamburgers are dished out at barbecues. Yes, folks, this one will have that feel to it, as the cops are catching everyone’s attention to address “all the little things” people have been doing wrong lately. Traffic violations, letting lawns and weeds sprawl over-long and out-of-control, leaving used cars out in the driveway…that’s what they’re after this spring! So, if you’re looking to move to Carrollton, then you know that you can count on the citizens to keep up on basic neighborhood beautification. If not, something like this will come through.
